Hey girls!
There’s clearly a disconnect in the world of hair. I asked on Instagram (@kandidlykait) what “how to” guide y’all wanted next and everyone said….hairstylist. I’ve been going to my girl CoCo for about 5 years and I’ve definitely had my share of experiences with hairstylists. Some good. Some bad. Some… I don’t even want to talk about, but after searching I found my forever stylist and I want to help you do the same!
This post is aimed towards Black hair care, but these guiding questions are applicable to anyone regardless of race, hair texture or style. Let’s dive in!
Trips to the salon are a treat for sure, but I think it’s a ritual that needs to be done on a consistent basis if you want to see real results. Having a stylist that cares about the health, longevity and strength of your hair is so important to the life of your strands. Whether it’s weaves, silk presses, highlights, blowouts or treatments these guiding questions will help you determine if this stylist is the one for you!
Guiding questions
- What’s their hair philosophy?
- Hair philosophy is huge. Do they care more about style than using the right products? Do they provide a good shampoo or do they only braid / perform the style? These are questions that you can see with a pass on their IG or by reading their salon or booking information. Personally, I want my stylist to scrub my scalp! I know my hair is healthiest when its been deep cleaned and conditioned by a professional.
- How’s the overall experience?
- When I first started going to my girl, she was in a salon. I was with her at two different ones until she decided to get her own suite. Personally, I enjoy the suite experience. There’s no wait, its just the two of us and for COVID purposes it makes it safer for her to do her job and for me to relax.
- If the salon experience is what you’re looking for– how’s the location? Parking situation? Do they offer water or coffee while you get serviced? Are the other stylists friendly? This all matters!
- How do they educate you on at home tips + tricks?
- CoCo is the first one to tell you…. At home care is crucial for the longevity of your style. I’ve learned so much from sitting in her chair.
- Do you enjoy the conversation (or if you’re not a talker) do you feel excited or peaceful when in their presence?
- CoCo and I have the best conversations. Part of that I think is because we have a client friendship sort of deal. I really do consider her my go to girl for all things beauty and hair. I think it important that you enjoy the conversation with your stylist or at least the ambiance and energy they give off.
- If you were to go on a consistent basis, is it in your budget?
- I’m not in your pockets sis– but at least for me, trips to my stylist are worth a regular line item in my budget. I don’t feel right when my hair isn’t done. If you’re in the same boat, find someone who’s prices don’t shock your bank account.
Here’s some of my favorite styles she’s done. Its all about communication, consistency and good quality haircare.
I hope this helps y’all find the right stylist for your needs! If you’re in the ATL area, I would 1000% check out my stylist and if you’re looking to buy high quality bundles she’s got that too!
