So, it’s time to find a new place to live. Maybe you’re finally moving out of on campus housing or you’re ending your current roommate situation. Either way it goes, you’ve been sitting on Apartments.com trying to find the perfect apartment with your laundry list of criteria. I’ve been there and as someone who’s currently living in their perfect apartment post grad, I’d like to share my top 5 tips with you on how I found it!
- Do a real look at your finances to determine how much rent you can afford.
- Never spend more than 30% of your income on housing. Let’s say you make $55k, your monthly rent should be max $1375.
- Make a list of your top 3 must-haves and stick to them.
- I encourage you think about what you value most in your living environment and make those your dealbreakers. For example– wood floors, new appliances and a balcony or great fitness center, near shops and a large closet. Pick these wisely because they’ll be the reason you re-sign in the future or exit all together.
- Opt for solo tours / self guided tours if possible.
- News flash– leasing agents are salesfolks. They will tell you any and everything to get you to hand in that deposit and sign. A solo tour will allow you to go at your own pace, look at every nook and cranny and sniff it out. Thank me later!
- If you can — search off peak rental season
- Peak rental season is spring / summer, off peak season is fall / winter. I wanted the best price for my unit so I decided to move in December. If you can, try and lease something in the less sexy months it can save you hundreds.
- Pray about it and trust your gut.
I hope these quick tips helped you decide where to live!
