Here’s my best life after college advice! This one is for my class of 2021/ 2022 ladies.
Y’all did it. You made it. You’ve turned in your final projects, registered for graduation and are staring down the clock until it’s time to throw on your cap and gown and get out of town.
There’s a freeing feeling knowing that you’ve completed a degree program. All of your coursework, all of your obligations and are entering the next phase of your life. There are so many questions I had about navigating post grad life. What do I do with my free time? Where am I going to live? How am I going to find a job?
Everyone talks about the freedom of post grad life. Your adulthood. Your 20’s– but no one really talks about the messiness, the comparison and the longing you feel to have it all together all the time.
As someone who graduated in 2020, like during the pandemic 2020, here are the top 4 pieces of life after college advice I have for you!
- Threw away the idea of a timeline: God knows my future. He has the perfect plan for my life. I thought I would be moving to Dallas and working in tech sales. God knew that wasn’t the right plan for me and He redirected me to Atlanta and blessed me with a job in Marketing. Man plans, God laughs. He knows what I need for my life after college.
- Looked at my expenses / budget: If you’re like me, you lived on campus all four years of college. I never really thought about bills outside of groceries, school expenses and hanging out with sorority sisters. Girl, let me tell you. You need start thinking about that because it can be a little bit of a culture shock. Start light and research rent in your area. Are you wanting your own place when you graduate? Are you living with a roommate or a friend? Think about how much its going to cost you and start playing around with those numbers. This is also a great time to think about where you’re spending your money. Is it at Target? Do you like going out to eat a lot? I believe that everyone’s budget is personal them and shouldn’t be restrictive. Think about your financial goals, pray about it and plan accordingly. Some great resources to follow are @Ellevest and @theFinancialDiet.
- Thought about the un-fun adult stuff: I located important documents (passport, social etc), created an emergency kit for my car and apartment, looked over insurance documents and took a deep dive into my healthcare package at my job, found a dealership to take my car to get serviced at and the list goes on. These are the most unsexy things ever, but its so annoying when you don’t have all your adulting ducks in a row. Take some time to check these things off of your list and keep them in a safe place. You never know when you’re going to need them.
- Congratulate myself for how far I’ve come: You are drastically different from the freshman that your parents dropped off at that dorm 4 or 5 years ago. You’ve overcome challenges, made and lost friends, had your share of heartbreak and triumph and discovered another piece of your story. Not to mention, you have a whole degree sis! That’s amazing.
I hope this little guide helps you iron out the next phase of your life. Post Grad life is amazing but its full of questions too. I love y’all and you got this! To keep yourself centered, check out my other post about peaceful living here.
